Sunday, April 7, 2024 – 9 am to 5 pm
Sportfishing Landings in Point Loma

A San Diego sportfishing tradition, The Port Of San Diego’s Day At The Docks is the West Coast’s largest public celebration of sportfishing. Signaling the official start of Southern California’s spring saltwater fishing season, Day At The Docks takes place on Sunday, April 7, 2024 against the colorful and dynamic backdrop of world renown sportfishing fleet on San Diego Bay. This annual event provides marine attractions for the whole family.

We have expanded our focus to include the area around us.  We invite you to discover and explore the many marine recreational opportunities on our waterfront, the restaurants and breweries in the area.  A bay side walkway provides access around the perimeter of America’s Cup Harbor from the commercial fleet docks and fish markets at  Driscoll’s Wharf on the north by restaurants and the sportfishing landings en route to Shelter Island on the south side.

Race Results Button 300x119

Saturday February 17, 2024 was an interesting day to race boats in the South Bay.

Our day started early with an intended run to place the new Buoy purchased by the Reed’s from Estate Sail for the “C” mark.  Along the way, we picked up some hitch hikers, Doug & Bob on the Bass Boat had engine troubles so the Parlay crey towed them to the start line and then set the new Buoy.  Our course was a double triangle 34 to B to C to 34 to B to A to 34.  There were nine boats at the start line and the only one that forgot to show up was the wind.  At noon there was a slight breeze and the boats all got across the starting line. Seven boats tacked south and two two a northern route.

Sarayu, Kiss and Windancer all rounded the first mark within boat lengths of each other and sprinted to a substantial lead over the chasing boats that was not overcome. Parlay and Estate Sail coming from opposite directions were setting up their own duel. Parly tacked first. But on the second approach, Parlay had to take a second tack to make it around B and Estate Sail tacked around B. Kim Dreesen was on the Helm for her first race and nipped at the stern of Estate Sail for the rest of the race but fell 4 second short of overtaking Estate sail.

After the first triangle taking +/- 75 minutes to complete, the wind picked up and the second half of the race took approx 45 minutes to complete. The light winds at the beginning of the race hindered the second half of the fleet but all boats crossed within about 18 minutes of the first finisher.

See you all next month.

Race Results Button 300x119

On the morning of January 20th, I was uncomfortably sitting in the Pool House bleachers at Brigham Young University watching a collegiate Dive Meet. It was 35 degrees outside and snow everywhere but a comfortable 76 degrees inside the pool house.  I received a few calls and texts asking if I knew who from North bay was going to travel down to South bay for the race. I anticipated a few hardy sailors would show up but I never expected that nine boats were ready to start the race at noon. I only have a few comments about the race:

Aragorn: “We were completely soaked. Helly Hansen foul weather gear was worthless and MIke’s golf rain suit wasn’t any better!

Parlay: ” The visibility made it tough for us and probably worse for the other boats. Lots of mist and no land bearings. Even with the bimini up we got wet.”

Estate Sail: “Great race today! Rained the whole race.”

Consigliare: “Wet one today. With all the talk about getting the new inflatable buoys, I made a wrong assumption at”A “. Oops!”

And my favorite!

Windancer: It’s great that the races are monthly, everybody should be over their Pneumonia by February’s race.”

Attached please find the race results from yesterday.  We started keeping points for year end awards in the following categories:

  1. Fastest elapsed time
  2. PHRF
  3. The modified Collins Handicap.

At our January 11, 2024 meeting the attendees agreed to level the historic information in the Collins Handicap Program by creating a new 2024 identity for the boats. When the race results were entered into the program this morning, there was an unanticipated occurrence. The Collins System did not have any historical data to use to calculate the finish times and 1, 2, 3 finish placement of the boats. The result is that all boats were treated as new boats in the system and beat the program’s benchmark and received a first place finish against the standard benchmark. Seeing this, this is a trend that I expect to see each time a boat races for the first time in 2024 but should start working itself out after the second or third time a boat races. The February results should start to provide first, second and third place points as historic data is collected.

In the meantime, we have an ad hoc group looking into developing an alternate scoring system for the future.

Let me know if you have any questions.

South Bay Family Sailing Series-April 2022

Race Results Button 300x119

Race Results from our April 16, 2022 race.

The day was quite windy and we had a fleet of 7 boats the Saturday before Easter.

  • Kiss, Aragorn & Pau Hana started at Noon.
  • Atsa II and Simplicity started at 12:07
  • Consigliere and Marilee started at 12:14

The track took us from the start line to the A mark. Kiss was first to round followed by Atsa II. Consigliere, MArilee, Aragorn & Pau Hana all passed the A buoy within feet of each other.  Everyone raced clean around buoy 26 and down the bay to the B buoy.  There was a second white buoy within the close proximity of the B mark and it caused some confusion. with  the actual B mark.  Kiss maintained her lead from start to finish. Consigliere and Atsa II crossed the line within the thinnest of margins, Marilee was a few minutes behind them with Simplicity, Aragorn and Pau Hana closing out the race together.

After hearing some boat to boat chatter on the radio after the race, I reviewed RaceQ’s to determine if anyone had cut the route short and missed the B mark. According to Race Q’s, Consigliere, Marilee and Aragorn did not pass the B mark correctly. You all still had a great race.

Here are the results from Saturday April 16, 2022.

First Across the Line:

      1. Kiss
      2. Consigliere*
      3. Atsa II

PHRF Finish Order:

      1. Kiss
      2. Consigliere*
      3. Atsa II

Collins HC

      1. Kiss
      2. Pau Hana
      3. Simplicity
      4. Atsa II
      5. Marilee*
      6. Consigliere*
      7. Aragorn*

* Completed the course but rounded the incorrect B Buoy.

See you all soon out on the water.
