The meeting was called to order at the San Diego U.S. Coast Guard station
at 1607 by Commander Dave Baer. There were 20 members, constituting a quorum,
and 9 guests.
INVOCATION: The invocation was offered by P/C Bob
Hubbard.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The pledge of allegiance was led by
ExO Katie Law.
MINUTES: Minutes of the 7 May 2004 membership meeting,
available for review at the meeting, were approved as published.
RECOGNITION:
The commander recognized the following
persons:
D/Lt/C Bill Johnson, D28 Administrative Officer, who had driven over
from Phoenix to attend the meeting
Harry and Sandra Smith, of the Convair Sailing Club
Marsha and Tony Thornberry,
new members to the squadron[transfers from the San Luis Rey PS]
OFFICERS' REPORTS:
Commander Dave Baer informed the members that the Executive Committee had
determined to purchase a new laptop computer to replace the one donated
by D/C Chet White, which was not suitable for use with the newly purchased
projector. Dave stated that a laptop could be obtained for somewhere between
$900 and $1,100, and that the expenditure was essential since all classes
would now be using power-point visual aids.
The Sail Fleet Race was held the previous Saturday, with four boats participating.
Bob Newsome of the SLRPS was the winner; and Ted and Julietta Umland came
in second. Dave, who was late to the starting line, was a distant finisher
on corrected time, but a great time was had by all. He would like to see
more boats racing and urged members to come out to race with the group.
Anyone looking to crew was also welcome and should contact the commander
or Ted Umland.
The Cruiser Navigation Contest will be held on Saturday, 31 July, with
Dave Weimer heading up the squadron's efforts. If members would like to
participate in this activity, they could contact Dave. People willing to
be Observers should get in touch with Catherine Isaksen, chief observer.
The D28 Raft-up will be at Mariner's Cove, Mission Bay, on the weekend
of August 14th-15th. Sailboats going from San Diego Bay are planning a
race on Saturday, starting from buoy 15, around buoy 3 to the south jetty
at Mission Bay. A number of boats will have dinghies to pick up people
coming from shore, and anyone interested in joining the raft-up for Saturday
evening should contact P/C Marie Baer for information.
A joint cruise with the San Luis Rey squadron to Catalina is planned
for the week of September 6th through 12th. Dave noted that this
is being called "The
Commanders' Cruise" since he and Commander Van Diehl are both
planning to make the trip. Anyone interested in joining the group
would be most welcome.
ExO Katie Law reported that the day at the Sun Road Marina on June 26th
was a success. She thanked Bob Hubbard, who organized the event, and Gordo
Parham for their efforts as Vessel Examiners, as well as Ron Weiner, who
had scheduled the Vessel Safety Checks over the course of the day.
She also noted that P/C J. Brockway Clark, chair of Co-op Charting, has
planned an outing for Saturday, 28 August at 1000. Mike Fontaine and Tom
Griffin have both volunteered their boats to accommodate people wanting
to go. Anyone interested in this activity should contact Katie by Wednesday,
25th August, as space is limited.
The Education Report was given by Commander Baer in Mike Fontaine's absence.
The Piloting and Advanced Piloting classes have been moved back from their
scheduled start dates in order to present the new course materials issued
for these classes by USPS. Piloting will now begin on 6 October. A Seamanship
class has been scheduled for mid-August, to accommodate the students who
are now finishing the June public Boating class. Dan and Trish Carlin report
that 12 students are expected to go on immediately to Seamanship, which
will be taught by Ken Glaze.
Dave Baer noted that SDSPS members are needed to help with plotting instruction
at Wednesday's Boating class, as well as to interview students at the conclusion
of the course on 21st July. He thanked Bill Bridge who had introduced plotting
at the previous Wednesday's course, along with Katie Law and Tom Fota who
had joined him in helping Dan and Trish Carlin with the unusually large
Boating class (some 30 students).
The Sail course has been completed (results not yet received). There are
still 8 students in the JN course and 6 students in the Weather course,
which Bill Bridge teaches on Monday nights.
AO Tom Griffin announced that Ted and Claudia Bowler will speak at the
next general membership meeting on Friday, 17 September. The Bowlers will
report on their recent crossing of the Pacific to Hawaii.
Secretary Barbara Goddard had nothing to report.
In the absence of Treasurer John Isaksen, Commander Baer presented John's
written report, giving an overview of the squadron's current finances and
noted that we are some $1,200 ahead of our position at the same time last
year.
OLD BUSINESS:
P/D/C Bill Bridge pointed out that the joint D13/D28 Fall Conference
conflicts with the Cruiser Navigation Contest [CNC], which SDSPS
is scheduled to host on 23rd October. He encouraged anyone willing
to help with the CNC arrangements that day to contact Dave Weimer.
NEW BUSINESS:
P/Lt/C Steve Gawura expanded on the need for more members to become
involved in the CNC (the old "Predicted Log" races). He
noted that Observers are particularly needed. As past head of Observer
training, he stated that it is not difficult to become certified
and described the parameters of the contests, including the fact
that the skipper with the smallest deviation from his projected course
time (considering boat speed, wind and tide) is the winner of the
contest. Boats range from 30 to 50 feet and sometimes as many as
15 or more boats turn out for these contests. Get in touch with him
or with Catherine Isaksen to volunteer.
The meeting was adjourned at 1630. The next meeting will be held at Southwestern
Yacht Club at 1900 on Friday, 17 September.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara A Goddard, P
Secretary
