The meeting was called to order by Cdr Dave Baer at 1938. There were 37 members present, constituting a quorum (list attached), and three guests. INVOCATION: The invocation was offered by Andy Backus. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The pledge allegiance was led by Administrative Officer, Katharine Law. RECOGNITION: OFFICER'S REPORTS : Executive Officer Katie Law reported that the Squadron has three upcoming events for which volunteers are needed: the Fred Hall Boat Show at Del Mar Fairgrounds, beginning 17 Mar 2004 through the following weekend (a sign-up sheet was circulated); the annual San Diego “Day at the Docks” on April 25th; and National Safe Boating Week, 22-28 May 2004, for which the Squadron could receive “Star points.” She urged members to check the website for details and sign-up opportunities. She called on Cdr Van Diehl, San Luis Rey Squadron, who commented that SLR members help us with the San Diego Boat Show and we help them staff the booth at the Fred Hall Boat Show. The ExO complimented Vessel Safety Check Chair Dick Barck on his new teaching CD for Vessel Examiner training, and noted that--with the help of this teaching aid--she had just passed the on-line test for Vessel Examiner and will be doing vessel exams under the tutelage of P/C Bob Hubbard. VSC Chair Dick Barck offered his congratulations to the ExO and presented her with the official USPS VE’s shirt and cap. Several persons volunteered to have their boats inspected, including Commander Baer. Educational Officer Mike Fontaine advised members to check out the education section on the national web site, and the Squadron’s website through which information could be gleaned on upcoming courses. He noted that USPS was working to access charts from MapTech for members to purchase and download. The SEO reported that the Spring Boating class has finished and Seamanship has just begun. Also, AP has been completed and the 8 graduates have enrolled in JN (perhaps a record). The Sail course is scheduled to start on April 13th. Sail Fleet Chair Ted Umland reported that a race was to occur on 13 Mar 2004 and that he was looking forward to SDSPS’s participation during the upcoming season. He noted that some skippers might be looking for crew and urged members to volunteer if interested. Treasurer John Isaksen presented a written financial report, noting cash and assets of $15,534.42, including $6,000 in the endowment fund. He noted that shirts, sweatshirts and caps were available for purchase by the members. SDSPS burgees were also available. If there is sufficient interest, he can also order vests with the Squadron insignia. Secretary Barbara Goddard noted that copies of the January minutes were available. Commander Baer commented that the Ship’s Mail is posted on-line, and distribution will be done electronically to conserve resources. If members want to receive copies by mail, they should contact the editor, P/C Steve Bakalis. IT Chair Tom Fota reported that he had researched the purchase of a new projector for use in Squadron courses and noted that the Executive Committee had voted to recommend to Squadron members that a second projector be acquired, to supplement the current projector. A motion was made and seconded that Tom Fota be authorized to buy the projector for approximately $1,600. Discussion revealed the projector was needed because of conflicts in courses run simultaneously. Although the prior projector was purchased for $1824 (used with a laptop donated by P/C Chet White), Tom Fota had found a similar, updated model for only $1,600, which could be paid for out of operating funds. The motion passed unanimously. Commander Baer noted that he had offered a challenge grant of $300 toward the purchase, and that P/C Steve Bakalis had offered to match it, so that $600 was already in hand toward the purchase. Chet White also offered to contribute toward the projector, and other members were encouraged to send contributions in any amount to John Isaksen. OLD BUSINESS : None. NEW BUSINESS : None. Commander Baer swore in the five new members recognized earlier in the meeting. Commander Baer announced a raft-up would at Glorietta Bay on 18 April 2004. R/C Ed Mraz announced that, in connection with National Safe Boating
Week, USPS would be filming in the San Diego Bay area on May 13th and
14th on the subject of security zones and restricted areas. A vessel
of 45 ft or more will needed as a camera platform, as well as other boats
to take part in the film. The business meeting was adjourned at 20:15, followed by a program by Raymond Ashley, Executive Director of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, on the history of the Museum’s ship, Californian. The next meeting will be on 7 May 2004 at SWYC; dinner at 1830 and meeting at 1930. Respectfully submitted, Barbara A. Goddard Guests: |
