General Membership Meeting
March 11 2005
The meeting was called to order at the Southwestern Yacht Club at 1935 by Commander Katharine Law. There were 26 members, constituting a quorum, and 4 guests.
INVOCATION: The invocation was offered by P/C Bob Hubbard.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The pledge of allegiance was led
by ExO Tom Fota.
MINUTES: Consideration of the minutes of the Annual Meeting
and Change of Watch were deferred.
RECOGNITION:
Commander Law recognized the following persons:
P/D/C Chet White
P/D/C Duane Leathers
P/D/C Jeff Markell [D/10]
P/C Bob Hubbard
P/C Ron Weiner
P/C Marie Baer
P/C Dave Baer
P/C Shaun McArdle
P/Lt/C Gordon Parham
P/Lt/C Virginia Prutow
The commander also recognized Anne Needham, mother of Lt/C Barbara Goddard,
and offered a special welcome to Marie Taggart, widow of James Taggart, and
who was herself very active in the Sea Belles.
Commander Law called a new member, Jean-Jacques Bellier, to the front and administered
the oath, with all other members renewing their membership pledges
and welcoming him into the squadron.
OFFICERS' REPORTS:
Commander Katie Law reported on her recent attendance
at the District 28 conference where San Luis Rey Squadron member, Adriaan
Veldhuisen, was sworn in as the new District Commander. She announced
that the D/28 inland rendezvous would be held on the weekend of April 8th-10th
at Katherine Landing, AZ, to be hosted by the Phoenix Squadron. She
encouraged members to attend.
ExO Tom Fota reported that there was a sign-up
page on the website for volunteers at the USPS booth for the Fred Hall
Boat Show, spearheaded by the San Luis Rey Squadron; people needing information
could call Tony Best of the SLRSPS or our Boat Show chairman, P/C
Shaun McArdle. There is also a sign-up page for our booth for the
April 24th "Day
at the Docks." As the IT Chairman, Lt/C Fota announced
that our web host had recently shut down the site, but it is now up and
running again with a new host.
AO Nancy Renzi reported that, at the conclusion of
the Boating class, Membership Chair Ken Glaze signed up five (5) new
members. She also announced that an Operations Training seminar
was to be held the next day, led by P/D/C Chet White at the Southwestern
Yacht Club.
ASEO Dan Carlin presented the Education report in the
absence of Mike Fontaine. Because of conflicting and overlapping class
dates, the squadron has purchased two new projectors, which were fully
covered by donations with no negative effect on the budget. Also,
thanks to Tom Fota's research, the new projectors have the capacity to
use "thumb drives" which eliminate the need to buy laptops to
run the programs.
The recently completed Boating class resulted in 23 graduates, of
whom five became new members. Marine Electronics and Advanced
Piloting are continuing, and Cruise Planning will be finishing in
a week. The BoatSmart class, taught by Ed Mraz, has just begun,
as has Ken Glaze's Seamanship class. The Piloting class had seven
(7) students who took and passed the final exam.
Secretary Barbara Goddard had nothing to report.
Treasurer Trish Carlin announced that the squadron
received thank-you notes from the families of James Taggart and Alan Hanshaw,
the two members in whose memory we made donations to the USPS Education
Fund. (P/D/C Chet White commented, for the benefit of those who did
not know Alan Hanshaw, that P/D/C Hanshaw was originally a member of the
Tucson squadron but joined us after moving to San Diego.)
She then summarized the squadron's financial position as of the end
of February 2005, noting that we were somewhat improved, thanks to donations
from members. Trish reported that she had moved the bulk of the Education
fund from US savings bonds, paying less than one percent, into a three-year
certificate of deposit, paying 2.8 percent.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Commander Law welcomed P/C Ron Weiner into the position of VSC
Chairman, noting that our Vessel Examiners have already been active. P/C
Shaun McArdle remarked that we need to publicize the fact that we do vessel
exams, since many people assume Vessel Safety Checks are only
done by the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Sail Fleet Races will be held on March 12th and April 9th, and the Cruiser
Navigation Contests will be on March 19th and April 9th.
P/C Dave Baer announced that the San Diego Sail & Power Squadron won
both the District Attendance Award and a 3-Star Trophy at the District
28 Spring Conference. He thanked all the people who helped to
make these awards possible.
OLD BUSINESS:
There was no old business.
NEW BUSINESS:
Commander Law called Lt Jean Bertran to the front of the room and
announced that the squadron wanted to reward his decade of service
in the position of advertising manager for The Ship's Mail. She
presented him with a framed certificate of appreciation and a gift certificate
to the Brigantine Restaurant. Trish Carlin added her appreciation,
noting what a labor-intensive task the position of ad manager was, as it required
repeated trips to businesses to solicit ads and returns to collect
funds.
The meeting was adjourned at 2000. The next General Members' Meeting
will be held at a site to be determined at 1900 on Friday, 6
May 2005.
Following a short break, the members enjoyed a presentation by
Dr. Raymond Ashley, Executive Director of the San Diego Maritime
Museum, about the "San Salvador," the first European ship
to enter San Diego Bay, sailed by the Spanist explorer Juan Rodriguez
Cabrillo.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara A. Goddard, P
