General Membership Meeting
11 November 2004
The meeting was called to order at the Southwestern Yacht Club at 1906 by Commander Dave Baer. There were 23 members, constituting a quorum, and 2 guests.
INVOCATION:
The invocation was offered by P/C Bob Hubbard
at which time he reminded members of the recent passing of P/D/C Alan
Hanshaw.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE:
The pledge of allegiance was
led by EO Katie Law.
MINUTES:
Minutes of the 10 September 2004 general membership
meeting, available for review at the meeting, were approved as published.

OFFICERS'S REPORTS:
Commander Dave Baer announced that the last Cruiser Nav Contest
was to be held on Saturday, 13 November. P/D/C Tom Swift, Dave
Weimer and Steve Bakalis were acknowledged for there efforts in arranging
or assisting in the planning and carrying out of squadron
events.
Other scheduled events were announced: the District Winter Council,
Saturday, December 4th; the 2nd Annual Parade of Lights to be viewed
from Shelter Island , December 12th; and the Annual Meeting to be held
Friday, January 14th.
It was further announced that since the Boating class was ending on
Tuesday, the 8th, interviewers were welcome to assist in recruiting
new members. Directions would be provided by Dave or Marie for
those interested.
ExO Katie Law reported that the District Conference in Cerritos
was well-attended and that meetings were excellent. Claudia and Ted
Bowler reprised their Cruise Planning presentation. District
28's hospitality suite was hosted by the Balboa Squadron. Numerous
members of other squadrons dropped in for a visit.
Prior to the District Conference joint meetings, member of both districts
participated in a Coop Charting outing.
Members were informed that dredging had begun in the harbor and that
the website could be contacted for details.
Lt Dick Barck was lauded for his leadership in the vessel examination
race with Phoenix. San Diego remains only two exams behind.
SEO Mike Fontaine reported that, to date, an overall number of 27 members
had passed grade classes. Of the 52 Boating students 20 became
new members. He thanked those who were instrumental in attaining
these results, teachers, Dan and Trish Carlin, Mike Ludlow, Ken
Glaze, Mike Sampsel, Chris Pikus, Bill Bridge, Ted and Claudia Bowler,
and Tom Fota, for implementing new computer software and for producing
labels for all notices.
For those interested in course offerings, Mike advised checking the
website. Fall courses will be at SWYC.
Members were advised that National offers discounts for charting products
as well as MapTech (through Mike), 50%, C-Map, 25%; Club C-Map, $59
membership; Nobeltec, 25% (Call them directly for their monthly updates.).
He advised members to use the National website as it has excellent,
valuable data.
AO Tom Griffin announced that the squadron needed 58 points to
qualify for the 3 STAR point category. Furthermore, he said he
would be participating in the December Coop-Charting outing which would
then mean that all Bridge members had participated.
Members were encouraged to participate in the upcoming Parade of Lights
social on December 12th at 5:30 near the Tuna Fisherman's statue on
Shelter Island. Those attending were asked to provide their own
food, except for dessert, which would be provided by the squadron.
Members were asked to respond to a growing concern about continuing
the tradition of having a meal at GMM meetings. Escalating prices
and restaurant hesitancy about sizable surges for the kitchen staff were
cited as possible reasons for discontinuing the practice. Various
members responded. Mel Mones offered that it might be appropriate
to meet with Jeff and Roberta to discuss these issues. Nothing
was resolved.
Secretary Barbara Goddard informed attendees of a recently published
article by D/C Chester White.
Treasurer John Isaksen summarized the squadron's financial assets:
$16,001.87, down from last year's $16, 944,72, due to the purchase
of a new computer to serve new classes requiring the use of CDs.
Members were reminded that hats and sweatshirts were available for
purchase. He also noted that few special orders for different
colors had been received thus far.
OLD BUSINESS:
No old business was brought up.
NEW BUSINESS:
Commander Baer asked members to volunteer for the Boat Show which Chairman
Shaun McArdle was heading up for January 6th-9th at the Convention
Center.
Ed Mraz enjoined members to take the newly improved Boating course.
It was reported that the Nominating Committee was nearly finished
compiling its slate of officers for 2005. Recommendations could
be directed to Chairman, Anthony P. Jeske, Mel Mones, E. Ron Weiner,
Lawrence R. Lange, or Ken Glaze.
The meeting was adjourned at 19:54, The next meeting is to be
held at Southwestern Yacht Club at 19:00 on Friday, 14 January.
