OFFICERS' REPORTS:
Commander Baer announced that the new laptop computer
had been purchased so that the Squadron now owns two laptops and two projectors
for use with the new PowerPoint courses to be introduced later this fall
and next year.
The Sail Fleet Race, held the previous Saturday, had five
boats participating; he encouraged members to come out for the upcoming
race on October 9th, following which there may be a raft-up at La Playa.
Anyone looking to crew is welcome to come and should contact the commander
or Ted Umland.
The Joint District 28/District 13 Fall Conference meeting
will be held on the weekend of October 22nd and 23rd at the Sheraton Hotel
in Cerritos, CA, about an hour south of Los Angeles. The commander recognized
R/C Ed Mraz, who encouraged all members to go. District 13 has about 17
squadrons, and an exciting program is planned which would be of interest
to anybody.
Unfortunately, the Cruiser Navigation Contest will also be
held on Saturday, 23 October, and this event is hosted by the San Diego
Squadron at the Coronado Yacht Club, with Dave Weimer planning the course
and organizing the squadron's efforts. Members willing to help with the
cookout should contact Tom Griffin or Dave. People willing to serve as
Observers should get in touch with Catherine Isaksen, chief observer.
Recent Boating Activities--the D/28 Raft-up at Mariner's Cove, Mission Bay
[August 14th and 15th] and the "Commanders' Cruise" to Catalina Island
[September 6th to 12th]--were both a success.
At the District Raft-up
(attended by four boats), D/Lt/C Adriaan Veldhuisen gave a demonstration
as to how to disembark from a dinghy, followed by an evening swim.
Commander
Dave and P/C Marie Baer and Mike and Carole Fontaine left San Diego on
the Friday of Labor Day weekend and were joined by Commander Van and Cida Diehl
for a restful 12- day cruise to Catalina.
Classes begin in October, including the public Boating Course at the Mission
Bay Yacht Club on the 5th of the month. Anyone able to serve as a table
proctor is asked to contact Dan and Trish Carlin.
The new Piloting course,
using the newMapTech CD-ROM technology will be taught by the Commander.
ExO Katie Law reported on her trip to the USPS Governing Board meeting
in Jacksonville, FL, which took place between Hurricanes Frances and Ivan.
Over 500 USPS members were assembled, all working to improve boating
safety and to educate themselves and the general public. She noted that
the US Coast Guard officer in command for rescue operations from Virginia
to the Florida Keys had expressed special thanks to the Power Squadron
for its efforts to keep unsafe boaters off the coastal waterways. A representative
of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration was also
at the meeting and complimented USPS members on their Co-op Charting
program.
Katie thanked the Commander and SEO Michael Fontaine for offering
their boats for the August 28th Co-op Charting outing, in which eight
members participated.
She also reported that SDSPS is still ahead of
the Phoenix squadron in our friendly Vessel Safety Check competition.
Commander Baer joined in the congratulations and urged any member whose
boat has not yet been inspected to contact Katie or Dick Barck, the VSC
Chairman.
SEO Mike Fontaine called attention to the article in
the Boat US magazine, describing the new Piloting and AP classes, both
totally redone, featuring a MapTech training CD. Dan Carlin will be using
the same CD in the public Boating Course at Mission Bay, starting October
5th and fliers for that course were available at the meeting for posting
in public places.
The MapTech technology will be continued into the Piloting
and AP courses. Mike noted that, even if you have passed Piloting, you
might want to retake it since the course has been completely revamped
and teaches students how to do digital chart work. Although it is not
easy, it is worth the effort and Dave Baer will teach his Piloting students
this new art, which is tied in to your GPS.
The Piloting class begins
October 6th; and Mike Samsel will teach the AP course in February.
Mike
Fontaine's Engine Maintenance class is underway, having started September
14th.
In the absence of AO Tom Griffin, Katie Law started the "Happy Dollars," which were also contributed by Ron Weiner, Suzanne Weiner, Barbara Goddard, Bill Bridge, Gordo Parham, and Adriaan Veldhuisen.
Secretary Barbara Goddard had nothing to report.
Treasurer John Isaksen presented a synopsis of the squadron's current
financial position but had no written report. Despite the purchase of the
new projector, the squadron was still about $1,300 ahead of the same time
last year.
He announced that the "Ship's Store" was
open with a variety of shirts, hats, and burgees available for purchase after
the meeting.
A question was raised from the floor involving how many students have
already benefited from the new equipment. Although an exact number of students was
unknown, P/D/C Bill Bridge commented that certainly many of the instructors had benefited
from its use.
OLD BUSINESS:
There was no old business.
NEW BUSINESS:
P/C Mike Grinnell was called to the podium by Commander Baer, who presented him with
a Life Membership Award for having received 25 merit marks, a tremendous
achievement. Mike also received a lapel pin and will no longer be required to
pay annual dues to USPS.
New member Kathleen Romero was asked to step forward and Commander Baer
administered the oath of USPS membership, in which all members present
joined.
Commander Baer then introduced SDSPS Cruise Planning instructors,
Edwin and Claudia Bowler, authors of the Cruiser's Guide to San Diego
Bay. The Bowlers gave a Power Point presentation about their sail to Hawaii
last summer and answered questions about the practical aspects of long-distance
cruising in a small boat.
The meeting was adjourned at 2017. The next meeting will be held at the Southwestern Yacht Club at 1900 on Friday, 12 November.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara A Goddard, P
