AHOY, MATES!

The USPS® Piloting Class begins next Tuesday night, 30 June 2009, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Maritime Institute, 1310 Rosecrans Street, San Diego. Class will be held in a second floor classroom.

PILOTING introduces the fundamentals of coastal piloting and positioning--the study of marine charts, aids to navigation, adjustments and use of the mariner's compas, dead reckoning, planning and plotting courses, and taking bearings to determine on-the-water positions. The use of GPS devices will be taught in conjunction with chart plotting procedures and forms the basis of all future learning about marine navigation.

The class is open to all those who have passed Seamanship or have taken the Squadron Boating Course and plan to take Seamanship at a future time. It runs from June 30th to September 15th. The cost of materials is $50 or, if you already have plotting tools, $45. Instructor: Katie Law, SN. If you have questions, call me at 619-281-3410.

The Maritime Institute is in the block north of West Marine on Rosecrans, off Dickens Street. Enter through the rear door and climb the stairs to your right. You may park behind the building, on Dickens Street or in the West Marine parking lot. We hope to see you there!
