All,
It was cool and overcast and initially windy, an ideal day for the intrepid
fleet of three boats that showed up for the March SDSPS Sail Fleet race.
Mike Collins and crew, Bob Chapman, Gordon Froehlich, and Kent Hildreth on
Marilee, Dave Baer and crew, Mike Sampsel and Jens Hedegaard on Casamar, Don
Litzenberg and crew, son Donald, Gene King, Thom McCune and Shaun McArdle on
Jandon. Our fleet made an impressive start at G17, all boats crossing the
line almost simultaneously in a brisk ten knots of breeze. Jandon led at
the first mark, G15 with Marilee and Casamar close behind. As we turned
down wind heading back into the bay the wind speed dropped to eight , five,
three, and finally under two knots. And the effect of the outgoing tide
made for a tough, slow leg to G19, and even slower leg to G21. Marilee fell
into a wind hole at the west end of North Island; but Casamar pulled ahead
staying closer to the North Island side of the bay out of the deep water
channel where the outgoing tide was stronger. As Jandon's crew enjoyed
lunch Casamar continued to gain and traded the lead twice before finally
pulling out ahead as we rounded G21 and headed back to G19. In spite of the
now beneficial effect of the tide Jandon was unable to catch Casamar.
Marilee gamely hugged the North Island side of the bay on the return to G22
but still couldn't gain on the leaders. Jandon's crew tweaked the tension
on the halyards, pulled a small piece of kelp off the rudder and continually
adjusted the sails but could not catch Casamar as she steadily increased her
lead. At the second rounding of G19 Casamar led by 90 seconds, at G22
Casamar was two minutes ahead. On the final leg from FM 19 back to the
finish line the wind began to build again augmenting the now waning outgoing
tide but Casamar held on to her two-plus minute lead. Marilee, unable to
overcome the weak winds of the majority of the race, trailed Casamar by 21
minutes at the finish. As Jandon returned to the dock and pulled into her
slip a twelve foot length of kelp rose from the keel and floated away.
That's my story. and I'm sticking to it!
So, who won the race on handicap? Well, Casamar was first over the finish
line and first on handicap! Congratulations Dave, Mike and Jens! Jandon
placed second and Marilee garnered third.
Thanks all for a great, okay, a good day on the bay. Our next race is the
second Saturday, April 11th. I will not be able to attend but have attached
the course for the April race. You may also access the SDSPS Sail Fleet
