Seamanship is the first members' course after the Boating Course. Building on the basics of recreational boating presented in the public boating courses, Seamanship adds foundational information for continuing boater education and is recommeded for new members, both power boaters and sailors, as well as a refresher for the experienced boater who has not previously taken the course. Students learn practical marlinspike, navigation rules, hull design and performance, the responsibilities of the skipper, boat care, operating a boat under normal and abnormal conditions, what to do in various emergencies and weather conditions, nautical customs and courtesy on the water.
The course contents should facilitate knowledge development for increased safe operation of recreational boats and provide the basis for completion of USCG licensing examination. Emphasis within the course has been placed on higher level boating skills. This course provides an introduction to the USPS educational program and a basic knowledge for the other Advanced Grades courses (Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Junior Navigation and Navigation), as well as Cruise Planning and Sail in the electives curriculum.
This 12-week class will be taught by Kenneth Glaze, AP, who is experienced in both power boating and sailing. The price of instruction and materials for non-members is $100. USPS member's cost (at a 60 % discount) is $40. Pre-registration is recommended. Call Katie Law at 619-281-3410.
