February 13 2010 Sail Fleet Race Results

Race #1

The first race of the year was fantastic! We couldn't have asked for better weather! Well, maybe a little more stable winds and a not so strong ebbing tide but it made for an interesting day. All the usual suspects were there, Dave Baer and crew Mike Sampsel and Allen Whichard on Casa Mar, Mike Collins and crew Glenn Winder, Gordon Froehlich providing Genoa Sail trim and whisker pole set, Diane Winder served as cutter and occasional helm. Bob Chapman took the main sheet and at the helm, Tom Todd helped constantly with training and sail trim overall. On board Jandon were Don Litzenberg, Donald Litzenberg (son), Thom McCune and new crew Garry Schaeffer. Lee and Alex Hornbrook on Serendipity rounded out the fleet, kinda, sorta. Serendipity, coming from South bay, was late for the 1200 start by seven minutes. They got off to bad start after a close encounter with a RED buoy!  Lee reports the following: "Okay, we'll put the sails up, hit the start line, stop that motor and gooooo!"  When we stopped the engine, we didn't have enough wind in the sails.  The current from the ebbing tide was stronger than we anticipated and oh so quickly it pushed us sideways toward the buoy.  "Ohhh, start the engine again, we're going to hit!"  We got the engine started just in time to give it a bit of gas, but we still delivered a glancing blow to that buoy.  It didn't know what hit him!  We have a red scar on the port quarter of our boat to prove it.  So we were off and running.  Once we found the wind, we were doing okay.  Then something dawned on me!  We hit the red buoy, but we're supposed to start at G17.... Oh no! We started from the wrong place!  "Well, we'll race it out just for practice."  We got out to R8, made the turn back and headed back in near the jetty.  The wind picked up, and we had trouble passing ballast point due to the strong current.  When we got to the entrance near the range marker, we tried to hail SDSPS Sail Fleet but got no answer.  We had dawdled, so we headed back to south bay and Pier 32.    The wind in the North Bay was howling. Many races were taking place. It was a gorgeous Saturday.   We made it back under the bridge, at a steady 5.5 - 6.0 knot clip on a run.  Nice".

Sorry we missed your hail Lee.

The usual suspects got off to a great start at 1200, although Casa Mar looked suspiciously early!  As Marilee and Jandon were crossing the line right at the starting horn, Casa Mar was already a boat length or so ahead! But the fleet of three headed toward the first mark, G11.  Marilee rounded first followed by Jandon and Casa Mar.  With good wind and her advantage of water line length Marilee carried her lead out to R8 at the Zuniga horn.  Marilee rounded R8 wide and Jandon was able to turn inside, gain a small lead and began many short tacks along the jetty back into the bay on the North Island of the channel trying diminish the effect of the ebbing tide. Marilee and Casa Mar stayed close behind Jandon as the fleet passed R12, rounded G15 and G17 and began the long broad reach toward FM19.  Marilee regained the lead briefly and lost it again while the Jandon crew enjoyed lunch on the way to FM19.  Coming out of an after lunch drowsiness Jandon's skipper dosey-doed, heading for a starboard rounding of FM 19 but recovered in time to make a proper port rounding, albeit, again behind Marilee.  Marilee dallied at FM 19 then started the long beat back to the G17 finish again relinquishing the lead to Jandon as she rolled onto a starboard tack.  Marilee rode a port tack around FM19 and all the way to the north, tacking at the Harbor Island Jetty, to begin a long starboard tack to the finish.  Jandon was overpowered and rounded up a couple times as the winds gusted to 20+ knots. Both Jandon and Casa Mar were exceeding their hull speed by a half knot or more!  Jandon's crew fought to keep her upright and going fast while watching Marilee steadily gain from across the bay.  Jandon crossed the finish line a mere twenty seconds ahead of Marilee.  Whew!  What a day!

So, who won the race on handicap?  Well, good winds and water line length favored the bigger boats.  Congratulations go to Mike Collins and able crew on Marilee!  Dave Baer and crew came in second on Casa Mar while Jandon again brought up the rear.
